A Product Manager plays a vital role in a tech company. It is an intersection between business, technology and user experience, and the Product Manager is the person responsible for defining the “why”, “what” and “when” of a product that drives the engineering team.
Here, Lux Group’s Ruchi explains what being a Product Manager is really like.
Describe a typical day in your job.
My mornings start with checking the emails from the night before to ensure all systems are a go, and also to catch up with our international teams. Once in the office my priority is to jump on our issue-tracking and project management tool – JIRA and list my priorities for the day. Then comes the daily tech team stand ups and the rest of the day is a mix of meetings and working on product documents. After a long day at work I like to spend time catching up on TV shows, reading books or playing board games.
What do you enjoy most about being a product manager?
The best part about being the Product Manager is that no two days are the same – some days I focus on one project, others are spent planning roadmaps, conducting brainstorming workshops, making mock ups and so on. I love designing solutions to problems by working with stakeholders of the business, and through that I get be part of everyone’s success!
What kind of skills do you think are important to be a good Product Manager?
Product Management is not just coming up with solutions and passing it on to the developers. It is about taking full responsibility of the product, managing the expectations, dealing with issues related to technology, timelines, budgets, etc. A Product Manager should also be able to work with teams of different disciplines and be a Jedi at managing multiple streams of conversations – emails, Skype, Google hangout, HipChat, tickets – and move them towards a solution. One needs to be endlessly positive because you should believe every problem has a solution and be determined to find it!
Tell us a little bit about your background: what studies have you done, and what other jobs have you had that have led you to this role?
I grew up in Mumbai, India and got an Engineering degree there. Before I got into Product Management, I worked as a Developer and a Software Quality Assurance Engineer. I have worked for the gaming industry in my early days but most of my experience is largely focused on E-commerce.
What do you like most about working at Lux Group?
I love being the people here, it’s such a young and dynamic team which is also very diverse and spread across the globe. The culture at Lux Group is easily one of the best I’ve ever experienced, especially with all the benefits like wine tastings, yoga sessions, ping pong tournaments and monthly ‘mash-ups’ – where we celebrate company wins and share updates. Plus who doesn’t like have massages at work?
